Occasionalism asserts that all active power and true causality belong solely to God. According to this theory, there is no direct causal relationship between living beings, objects, and events in the universe; everything comes into existence directly through God's power, and this process of creation continues in a specific order. For example, in the case of cotton burning when it comes into contact with fire, the fire is not an actual cause but a secondary occasion indicating the divine order of God's creation. Occasionalism has been a subject of significant philosophical and theological debate both in the West and in the Islamic world.
The first volume of our compilation on occasionalism examines the philosophical dimensions of the theory and its place in Islamic thought through key texts. These texts address topics ranging from fundamental assumptions such as why possible events like the burning of cotton require an efficient cause, to issues such as human freedom, the structure and interpretation of scientific activity, and the compatibility of various ontological models with occasionalism.
