Occasionalism is a theory that shaped the intellectual agenda in both the Islamic world and Europe for centuries. Despite its critical importance in understanding the history of philosophy—especially its central role in the transition from the Middle Ages to the modern era in Europe and its influence on major debates in modern Western philosophy—it is now scarcely mentioned in contemporary narratives. Attributing active causality solely to God’s power while explaining creation through secondary causes within a divine order, occasionalism can be traced back in the West as far as Augustine. In Islamic thought, it was especially developed by the mutakallimūn (Islamic theologians), and later transmitted to Europe through figures such as Averroes (Ibn Rushd), Maimonides (Musa b. Maymūn), and Thomas Aquinas.

Traces of the theory can be found in Descartes' metaphysics, and it was systematically formulated by thinkers such as Malebranche, Geulincx, and Cordemoy. Through Malebranche’s influence, philosophers like Berkeley, Hume, Jonathan Edwards, Leibniz, Locke, and Fontenelle engaged with occasionalism, either adopting elements of it or developing their own views through critiques of the theory.

The second volume of our compilation on occasionalism features foundational texts that reveal the overlooked importance of occasionalism in Western philosophy and points to the necessity of rewriting the history of philosophy from this perspective.

Vesilecilik, İslam dünyasında ve Avrupa’da yüzyıllarca entelektüel gündemi belirlemiş bir teori. Avrupa’da Orta Çağ’dan modern döneme geçişte ciddi etkisi olan ve modern Batı felsefesindeki tartışmaların merkezinde yer alan bu teori, felsefe tarihini anlamada kritik öneme sahip olmasına rağmen günümüzdeki anlatılarda neredeyse hiç geçmez. Etkin nedenselliği yalnızca Tanrı’nın kudretine veren, ancak yaratmayı belli bir düzen içinde vesile nedenlerle açıklayan vesilecilik, Batı’da Augustine’e kadar geri götürülebilir. İslam düşüncesinde özellikle kelâmcılar tarafından geliştirilmiş ve İbn Rüşd, Musa b. Meymûn, Aquinas gibi figürlerce Avrupa’ya aktarılmıştır. Descartes’ın metafiziğinde izlerine rastlanan bu teori, Malebranche, Geulincx ve Cordemoy tarafından sistematik hâle getirilmiştir. Malebranche’ın etkisiyle Berkeley, Hume, Jonathan Edwards, Leibniz, Locke ve Fontenelle gibi filozoflar vesilecilikten etkilenmiş ve bu teoriye getirdikleri eleştirilerle kendi görüşlerini geliştirmişlerdir.

Vesilecilik üzerine hazırladığımız derlemenin ikinci cildi, vesileciliğin Batı felsefesinde göz ardı edilen önemini açığa çıkaran temel metinleri içermekte ve yeni bir felsefe tarihi yazımının gerekliliğine işaret etmektedir.
